SUSTAINIBILTY: Going Green with magazine distribution

Human activities are impacting the earth in unprecedented ways, and understanding our company's impact on the environment is a chosen self evaluation.  This together with the industry's "green" awareness and implementations efforts are ongoing programs that help direct our stewardship of our earth.

Southern Wisconsin News is concerned about our planet, its people and its long term health.  We strive to do our part to promote a better quality of environment now and for future generations.  We take seriously the need for our company, its products and services to be environmentally appropriate and friendly.

Newsstand Best Practices
Southern Wisconsin News works hard to compute the correct product and quantity is delivered to our customers to achieve sales efficiencies through the use of store level category and titles sales data.  We have invested in a sophisticated order regulation distribution category management system from our system's vendor, Data Processing Services, Inc.  You can learn about more about how we are able to achieve our goals at their webpage on allocation process.  Southern Wisconsin News also regularly attends industry conferences, meetings and is member to associations of the periodical industry to help educate ourselves on the ways our company can contribute to an improved environment.

Marketing and Business Communications
Much of the focus of printed media environmental issues is in the production of the magazines. However there are many other areas within our company we can develop environmentally preferable solutions to improve and streamline our business and how we interact with our customers. One such area is in communications through non-paper contact.  The internet email, electronic data exchanged, electronic document interface (EDI) and scan based trading (SBT/POS) eliminating paper, streamlining operations and improving over all efficiency of distribution.

Magazine Carbon Foot PrintCarbon Foot Print Reduction

We have begun to understand and implement reductions in carbon foot print, not only with our own operations, but our publishing suppliers have taken on an active role to measure and quantify magazine carbon foot print impact on our environment.  reducing your carbon foot print requires we dig deep to find reductions and eliminations such as best light bulbs for electric consumption reduction, environmentally friendly cleaners, truck route optimization, and many many more areas.

So what is carbon foot print anyway?  A carbon footprint is a "measure of the impact human activities have on the environment in terms of the amount of greenhouse gases produced, measured in units of carbon dioxide".  It is meant to be useful for individuals, nations and organizations to conceptualize their personal (or organizational) impact in contributing to global warming.  The carbon footprint is a subset of the ecological footprint, which includes all human demands on the biosphere.  Learn what is carbon foot print here.

Magazine Publishers of America's (MPA)"Please Recycle This Magazine" campaign continues to grow as publishers embrace and promote in their magazines.  Publishers have begun to run ad's in their magazines to reinforce the message that magazines are recyclable reaching and educating the consumers.
